Final Farewell!

To all my classes and followers!

Thank you for a very exciting and rewarding practicum at Sutherland Secondary School. It was truly a great experience, and one I will never forget.
A special thank you to my grade 8 classes who took part in "Drewpardy" on Friday! What a great way to end my practicum at Sutherland. I wish all of you the best of luck and a strong finish to you school year!

Grade 11 Social Studies


We have now moved passed world war 1 and are heading towards Canadian life in the early 1920's and 1930's. Keep up the hard work this week. You will have a quest on Friday.

Here are the outline of the notes for the week


Monday: Treaty of Versailles: who were the major players? What was the outcome? What was the German Response? Homework ----> page 47: 3, 4, 5, and 10 a. these will be taken in and giving marks.


Tuesday: Impact of the Armistice on Canadians: What was the League of Nations? who's idea was the league? What was the Spanish Flu? For the library assignment sheet click here


Wednesday: Canada during the 1920's: What were working conditions like in the 20's? What was the OBU? Why was Winnipeg important during the 20's? New Library task Click here

Welcome back from Easter break. I hope that everyone was safe, and used their time wisely during the break. As you know we are going to have our poster presentations on Wednesday. This should be a great showcase for all of your hard work. Here is the outline of the notes for the week. As a reminder these notes are the skeletal version of what you would actually see in the classroom.

Tuesday: Propaganda poster: This is your last day to finish it. The presentation of the posters will be on Wednesday. I will not be questing you tomorrow due to the fact that we have people away. Expect a quest on Friday.

Wednesday:Presentation of posters/gallery tour you will be giving a short speech as to why your poster is propaganda, and why you chose to use the specific propaganda you did? Second portion of the class will be used for note taking.
War in the air: What is an ace, why were they important figures in Canadian history? Homework:-----> Page 39: questions 1,3,5

Thursday: The War at Home: What was happening in Canada? what was the reaction to the war efforts? what was the feeling of public opinion?

Friday: Quest, Propaganda and Conscription Crisis: What is Conscription? why is it important to World War 1? How was Propaganda as a tool for the government?

It has been a good start to history thus far. We are looking to keep this momentum going into this coming week. We will be looking at the battles of the first world war. As a reminder, these notes are a outline of what is covered in class, but the notes used in class.

Monday: Ypres, Somme, Vimy Ridge: Who was involved? where did these battles take place? how did Canadian affect the battles?

Monday: First Nations: a changing Canada: What are residential schools? was is the federal Indian Act, Why is this prevalent to us today? Homework ---> questions 1, 3, 5, 6 page 18 in your text

Tuesday: Urbanization: A review of concepts went over in human geography, how urbanization changed Canada from 1900's

Wednesday: War and Change: What factors led to the World War 1, How do actions in Europe affect Canada? Homework ---> Write a letter to the Prime Minister of Britain as the Prime Minister of Canada outlining the your reasons to EITHER join the war, or not join the war. Underline your thesis.


Friday: Canada's response to the War: How did Canada react to the news of War? Who were the major players?





Grade 8's

Monday: Revision of test material: Test, binder check, homework ---> letter from your travels with your partner

Tuesday: Introduction to India: the meeting of Cultures

Wednesday: Flowering of Chinese Civilization: Homework --> Keep working on your letter to Mr St. Laurent from an Islamic country or countries of your choice (the more information the better) feel free to include pictures or what you have done during your time there

Welcome back from your Spring break!!!


I hope that everyone is rested and ready to get back into the swing of things again. There has been an unfortunate delay not allowing me to put up the slides for the week. I will have this fixed Monday morning. See you tomorrow!



Grade 11's



I have moved your test from Monday to Wednesday. I have done so to give you time to work on your final project in the library. This time is to be used for rehearsal and final touch ups on your United Nations project. I will be available for any questions that you may have.



Monday: Work in the computer lab, make sure that you have your section of the presentation perfected! MAKE SURE TO DRESS PROFESSIONALLY!!



Tuesday: THE UN CONFERENCE DAY! (With Guest judges Mr. Jones, Mr Aw-Yong, Mr Benoy)



Wednesday: Final Geography examination



Thursday: A different Canada: Has Canada been the same way for ever? How has it changed? What are the factors that lead to a change.



Friday: Canada's Changing Population: How did Canada change its population base? was this a must? What factors lead to a population increase. Where did the immigrants come from

We will be starting a unit on the Byzantine empire. We will start tomorrow off with a look into Islamic civilizations. Reading ahead is never a bad idea.

Great job last week on your quests. Most people did quite well. These strong marks will be important heading into your final two weeks of the human geography unit. There will be a unit test on Monday March 15th. This will cover all the material that we have gone over thus far.

Well this week went quite well for both classes of grade 8's. I will give back your test, as soon as the final person writes the test. This week we will continue to study Constantine and the fall of the Roman empire.

Monday: We will be watching a video about the fall of the Roman empire. There will be a question sheet that we will use to supplement the video.

Tuesday: What would it be like to be part of the Roman Army? What are centuries? What is a centurion? Who was the Legate? What is a legion?

Wednesday: Collapse of the Empire: Who are the German tribes? why are they important? Who invaded the Roman empire and why?

Thursday: The Fall of Rome: What are the factors that lead to the eventual fall of Rome? what does economic, social and political mean? why are these considered factors of the fall?

Friday: Chapter test: Finish watching the movie on Constantine: question sheet to be handed out during movie

Well we have about 2 weeks left in our human geography unit. I will make sure that I get you the outline for your final unit project on Tuesday so you can start thinking about what you are going to choose to do. I have decided to make the groups myself and will let you know what they are on Tuesday. Here is the powerpoint slides for the coming week.

Tuesday: Economic Development: Disparity, money sector, non-money sector, classifying economic activities. Homework --> Page 387 questions 1-3

Wednesday: Core and Periphery: What are they, why do we use these terms, are they advantages to both? which is better to live in? Homework--> What are 3 pros and cons of living in the periphery, and core?

Thursday: Changing Economies: How do they change, what are the called in the different stages of change? where is Canada today?

Friday: Helping the Periphery: Why does the Periphery need help? how do we help the periphery? what role does the government have in helping the periphery




Social Studies 8

We had a decent first week, for some of you this week will be a much needed change of pace to have left the geography section in the dust. We will continue to build on the momentum which we had at the end of last week. Here are the powerpoint slides, this will set the tone for the week.

Tuesday: Geography unit test: This test should take up most of the class, I will have a unit overview ready for those who finish early.

Wednesday: Introduction to Art and Architecture: We will visit the relationship between Greek and Roman architecture, as well as the Technology and Science portion of early Roman Culture. Homework --> questions 2,3,6 in Patterns of Civilizations (page 6).

Thursday: The Rise of Christianity: Who was Jesus, what does he have to do with Christianity, why was he so popular? Homework--> Patterns of Civilization page 10 question 1) Gospels, Peter, Paul ... 2) Martyr, Messiah... questions 3) and 6. Due Friday morning

Friday: Breakdown of Unity: What is breaking down? who is involved? what factors lead to a breakdown?

Yet again another great week of classes!! We have been moving fairly quickly, if you have any questions about the material, please do not hesitate to ask me questions. I am willing to spend extra time to allow for the material to become clear.

For this coming week, we will study urbanization, and the shift from rural to urban. Have a great weekend.

Monday: Function and formation of the modern city: Push/pull factors, early functions of a city, site and situation, and locational advantage. Homework --> Identify three push and three pull factors that encourage movement from rural to urban. Identify one aspect of location that has been most detrimental to the growth of North Vancouver.

Tuesday: City formations: Political/Religious cities, the organic city, the planned city, the transit city, the automobile city.

Wednesday: Land uses in cities: Industrial, residential, commercial, transportation, institutional, and other. Homework --> read pages 384-388 in your textbook

Social Studies 11 February 8th-12th

Congratulations on a great first week of the new semester. I have enjoyed the classes that we have had thus far, and continue to look for the same type of effort shown in the first week. Thank you for your informational paragraph. I learned a lot about all of you. We have a very diverse class with many different backgrounds. I was also quite pleased with the quest results. Keep up the good work, it will show in your marks.

Monday: Position of women and children in a global context. A look at Armina's day, Education as power. Children in Crisis. Children at war. The working child. Homework-->See page 357 and answer questions 1, 2 (a+b).

Tuesday: The Health Crisis: Are we doing enough? Drinking water availability, Pandemics, HIV/AIDS, Foreign Aid. Homework --> read pages 362-363 and answer these questions: 1) Which side of the debate do you support, explain your answer? 2) What other rights would you add to Ignatieff's list for human rights?

Wednesday: Global Village: What is it? Ideas surrounding the global village, how it works, transportation networks, global ecosystems. There is no homework for today.

Thursday: A deeper look at the global village Global economy, What is globalization? How could it impact you? The changing face of globalization. Homework --> Describe the working conditions of the women featured in Hidden Face of Globalization --> which can be found on youtube. Remember to study for the quest tomorrow.

Friday: Urbanization: What are its implications? Urban vs Rural, Urbanization trends, 100 year trend. How do we cope? Homework --> page 371 questions 15-7 answer questions 1,2,3. Have a great weekend .

Here are the powerpoint slides to give you all an idea of what to expect. I am excited about this new semester, and look forward to having a great experience with each and every one of you. I am passionate about social studies and look forward to transferring my passion into an enjoyable class for you! It is my goal to make social studies fun and a class you look forward to attending.

There will be a short quiz taking place on Friday February 5th. The quiz will likely be out of 15 marks.

I will post homework at the end of each day.


  • Tuesday February 2nd - Introduction to Human Geography: World population, Demographics, Distribution, Rule of Seventy. Homework for today's class is --> Read pages 317 324, answer page 324 question 1. a and b
  • Wednesday February 3rd - Dependency Ratio: Population distribution by age, country, gender, who are dependents? Homework for today's class is --> What does ecumene refer to? what is population distribution? what does population density refer to? How does population density affect carrying capacity? What technological changes have occurred to increase carrying capacity? Read pages 328-336.
  • Thursday February 4th - Standards of living: Is it fair for everyone? How do we measure standards of living? Where are standards of living the highest? where are they the lowest? Division of the planet. Homework for todays class is --> paragraph about yourself. Study for the quest tomorrow.
  • Friday February 5th- The Dreaded Poverty Trap What is the poverty trap? how do countries and people fall into this so called "trap"? What can we do to get out? Don't forget the test. Homework for todays class is --> Read pages 347-351 in your textbook. Have a great weekend! P.S. I have your quizzes marked and read your paragraph. I will hand those back on Monday.
